Spectroscopy Service

The Spectroscopic Techniques Laboratory provides different spectroscopic characterization techniques focused on the characterization of the different materials developed at the institute. It includes more general characterization techniques such as IR or UV-Vis-NIR as well as more specific ones such as electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

Scientific equipment available

  • UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer JASCO V-780, double beam spectrophotometer with an operational wavelength range 200-1600 nm. It is equipped with different sample holders, a diffuse reflectance integrating sphere and a temperature controller peltier (0-100 ºC).
  • Infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR) FT-IR JASCO 4700LE, equipped with an Attenuated Total Reflectance accessory (ATR) for powder samples, films, polymers, liquids, etc.
  • Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Bruker ELEXSYS E-500, equipped with a variable temperature unit, a field frequency (F/F) lock accessory, goniometer, different resonant cavities and built-in NMR Gaussmeter.

USE OF THE SERVICE IN 2020

The service offers 1-2 trainings each week on the FT-IR 4700LE i UVVisNIR V-780 eqipments, as well as daily support to any user in the planification and optimization of the mesurements according to their typology and scientifical & technical support. The technicians in charge daily solve problems with the FT-IR i UV-Vis-NIR equipments (base line, background, conection computer-equipment, noise, CO2/H20 peaks, general use questions, artifacts, alignment, etc.).

The service also aids the IP and other users on the planning and execution of EPR with its users, as well as reviewing and answering petitions in the NFFA platform to make studies using the services' equipments.

Maintenance includes care of the Cary 5 service, that was out of commision by March, as well as the V-780, the EPR, and a trimestral N2 purge of the FT-IR.

Finally, the Spectroscopy Service has created and updated protocols to ensure the safe use of the equipment during the pandemic.

These are the percentages of use of the service, considering it was closed from March 13 to May 21. The service had capacity and use limitations from that point on according to the Contingency Plan to face the COVID-19 pandemic:

The FT-IR had a total of 65 users, with 96.16 % of internal use and 3.84 % external use. The external users of the service were the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron – Institut de Recerca (VHIR)(4 hours, 2.05 %); GABRIEL BENMAYOR, S.A (3.5 hours, 1.79 %).

The UV-Vis-NIR JASCO V-780 + UV-Vis Cary 5 (only available January and February 2020) had a total of 67 users, with 97.3 % internal use and 2.7 % external use. The external users of the service were Nanomol Technologies (15.98 hours, 2.49 %); and ICN2 (1 hour, 0.16 %).

The EPR service had a total of 15 users, with 75.86 % internal use and 24.14 % external use. The 7 IP that used the service are: José Vidal (46 hours, 22.66 %); Immaculada Ratera (18 hours, 8.87 %); Núria Crivillers (18 hours, 8.87 %); Marta Mas (43 hours, 21.18 %); Josep Fontcuberta (9 hours, 4.43 %); Elies Molins (16 hours, 7.88 %); Teresa Puig (4 hours, 1.97 %).

The external users of the service were the Universidad de Málaga (24 hours, 11.82 %); the Universidad de Granada (20 hours, 9.85 %); and the UPC (5 hours, 2.46 %). 

Outreach, publications and projects in which the service has participated

The service has participated in the outreach activities and projects of the Nanomol Group.
