Low Temperatures and Magnetometry Lab

The Low Temperatures and Magnetometry Lab allows for very precise magnetic and magnetotransportation measurements, useful for most characterization efforts that usually require knowledge on the magnetic and electronic properties of the materials investigated.

Scientific equipment available

Quantum Design MPMS-XL (SQUID): Magnetometer based on a SQUID detector that allows for the detection of extremely low magnetization signals as well as its dependence as a function of the applied magnetic field and temperature.

Quantum Design PPMS System: A multipurpose platform that allows for a complete characterization of the magnetic and electronic transport properties of materials under extreme magnetic fields (up to 90 kOe) in a broad span of temperatures from about 400 K down to 1.8 K.

USE OF THE SERVICE IN 2020

The service has been used for a total of 5,904 hours, divided between internal users (5,751 h) and 3 external users (90 h ICN2, 10 h UB, 53 h NFFA). The internal users correspond to measurements from 19 ICMAB IPs. The NFFA accesss was remote, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

A total of 7,423 L of helium were consumed, of which 6,463 L (87%) were recycled and 960 L (13%) were purchased. The helium recovery rate (87 %) was higher than last year's (70 %).
